Spring 2020 One Room Challenge Week 2: Wallpaper Change Up!

If you are new here, welcome!! You’ll also see that I’m new here too!! I’ve been putting blogging off for years…..I’m an interior designer, not a blogger, but the One Room Challenge was a good excuse to start. And maybe, just maybe, even though I’m far from a blogging expert, you’ll walk away with some inspiration. At least that’s my hope!

So enough chit chat, back to the ORC! I’m so excited to be participating for the first time and look forward to seeing everyone’s finished rooms! In case you missed last week, I chose my daughter’s bedroom for my first ORC. Her room was a mash up of the blue room she wanted when we moved in over seven years ago and the re-design I was suppose to do two years ago. Last week I shared what her room has looked like for the past two years - mid re-design.

Sophia’s Teen Bedroom: The Inspiration Board

Well, let just say that some of that has changed in the last week. She is 12 …. and she’s a girl. What went from, “Mom, do whatever you want, just don’t make it girlie.” went to “I want more drama.”!!! Sophia decided she wanted something that would be a little more…….grown up. At what point did my kiddo turn into a teenager needing drama? It seems all I have to do is blink right now and she’s matured overnight!! So here is what my new involved client and I discussed and what her design plan is now.

I am really excited about the Nuvolette wallpaper from Cole and Sons we will be putting on her ceiling! As a bonus, she is getting built-in shelves and a window seat since she’s losing her shelves she had for all of her things she’s collected when we travel. I now have to get built-ins done within the next ten days, so I will either be pulling out my tools or I will be begging my carpenter to come over and do it for me!

She also decided she wanted a cool neon sign over her bed, so I ordered one just for her! Sophia suffers from anxiety sensory issues so we work on just breathing a lot. It’s become our mantra …… Just Breathe!! Super excited to have the sign arrive! Her duvet has arrived and the dresser is being delivered this week. I still need to order a few things and due to Covid some items I need will not ship until August, so I will have to wait or make some changes.

The walls have been painted with a color from the Sherwin Williams Emerald Desginer Edition. I can’t wait to share that with you when I get another cut in and final coat. It went on like a dream, but it’s going to take three coats to finish up the way I would want it to. I posted in my Instagram stories this week about the process.

What’s Next?

Still on my list:

  • Area rug/fun Moroccan rug

  • Mirror/square brass to bring a little light into the room

  • Lamps/mismatched, black and she needs to choose a desk lamp

  • Window seat fabric/Awesome Designer’s Guild fabric to tie in the colors from the artwork Sophia selected last year

  • Artwork/Minted has a great modern floral Sophia likes and we will need to make some additional pieces

  • Frames/frame existing artwork we already have and new artwork we will make

  • Paint bed frame/keeping her bed

  • Nightstands/not shipping until August, may reselect

  • Desk Chair/not shipping until August, may reselect

It will be nice to get her room finished and I know Sophia will be happy to have her space back and I’m excited to tackle her room so it reflects her personal style. I hope you follow along!!

Be sure to check out the other 302 participants in the ORC!
